We bought a map from the Bintang supermarket and have found it very helpful, we have driven to many places in Bali and Lombok over our 8 trips. What I do as navigator is read the shop signs to see what village we are in and follow the villages on the map, there are so many small ones. We have never been lost.
We use this hire place and they are great because they let us take the car to Lombok which many will not do. This November we paid 165,000rp a day for hire of a Taruna and they are great cars. Heres the contact details of the place we use - Duta Kereta Express- I Putu Sutarta, manager. Padma St Legian. Ph (0361) 751437, 750971. Fax (62-361) 750971.
Driving in Bali is actually easier than some of the cities in Australia, they drive quite slow so its easy to stop suddenly, always beep your horn when you are overtaking someone, its polite to let them know you are there especially bikes, always stop at lights behind the white line, wave politely at the police that may be wanting you to pullover (works for us and have only been booked once for going up a one way street the wrong way), wear the seatbelts in the front, and always keep an eye on the side mirrors for bikes. Some streets are two way for bikes but only one way for cars good to keep this is mind as well. Enjoy, in our opinion its the only way to see Bali.
