Olias is right once again.
Melbourne is the same as Perth. Hand luggage gets regularly and randomly weighed by Security at the Front Door before Customs / Immigration (especially 'roller wheels' small suitcases and heavy looking backpacks etc.) 7 kg. is the standard limit, with a little bit of lea-way. DO NOT exceed 10 kgs. for hand luggage (one item only, plus a lap top or hand bag). Keep it under 9 kgs. and you should always be safe. Happy Holiday!
