If you are able to give your friends a visa debit card this is the fastest and cheapest way to send money to Indonesia. The debit account is separate to your other accounts so they can only access the amount you are sending to them.
An ANZ visa debit card has a $6 monthly account fee, and the cost to withdraw at ATM is $5 regardless of amount. As soon as you transfer money to the account they can access it so there is no waiting time.
Bank transfers can attract a fee not only from your account, but also from your friends local account - the last time I sent money this way I was charged $24 by my bank, and my sister-in-law was charge rp 100 000 by her bank.
