I think a few of your probs may have been cross cultural ones. For instance, you NEVER queue in India, it's considered very odd and somewhat strange behavoir. I would be VERY suprised that a group of Indians wealthy enough to travel would have NO English at all. Generally you'll find a fair percentage of even the poorest of the poor can speak at least a few words.
