As one of the other replys stated, you can often get very cheap discounted deals, especially out of peak season. Since you have to pay airport taxes you will often find you are only saving a few hundred dollars. If you want to travel in peak season you need to book about 11 months in advance. If you don't care when you travel and you are prepared to fly at a day or two's notice, you can generally get a frequent flyer seat off peak but you need to be checking three times a day and be flexible with the duration. Sometimes you can geta seat there but have to wait a few weeks to get one back. The 11 months in advance is the easiest.
