I've been a few times in October and found the weather to be really good,didn't have much rain at all.
I would definately stay at Kuta first and get all your shopping done.Also once your shopping is done you know how much room is left in your suitcases. I had a friend who went a couple of years ago and she didn't do her shopping first. She had planned on buying so much, anyway the second bombing happened and she went home early without doing her shopping. I would stay longer in Kuta and only a few days in Ubud, but then that's me. I can only sit by a pool and read for so long and then I am itching to be doing something. Having said that, I could lie on a massage table etc. all day. You will find everything in Kuta cheaper than elsewhere because there is so much competition (massages etc.)
