I visited bali 18 years ago. Never left Sydney before that. Suffered a baggage strike in Sydney that put us back three days and spent half our measly spending money waiting for a flight out of sydney before we even got out of town. Stayed in the lowest budget "Blue" something hotel that provided two bunks and three walls in the bathroom between the four of us. The club had ducks all over the wall.......not in very nice positions...does it still exist?
Anyway, getting off track. The food was terrible within the "resort". we couldn't even eat the breakfast that was included. We walked across the street to Goshas every day for Breakfast and dinner. They had vegemite and "Jonny Walker" was our waiter every single day. I returned March 2006 and my first dinner was at the Gosha. As good as ever. My memory isn't as good as it was but "Jonny" claims to be the original and is now their Matr'e De so to speak. If it wasn't him I don't want to know. He said he remebered me.....LOL but for all the peny pinching and hard time we went through on the first trip I have fond memories. If this isn't getting too boring I'd like to share one memory with you.
Our last night 18 years ago loomed and we wanted to show Johnny our appreciation. It was their New Year. We bought all the people we had met over the trip and asked them to tip $2 each. Hey, interest rates were somehing like 18% and I could barely afford to brush my teeth. anyway, I think we tipped him $34 but I had heard we should do it discreetly. He was very happy. Then I pulled out a family block of Cadbury chocolate (slightly soft). Not only did he almost cry, he showed everybody! I asked him why he didn't hide it away and take it back to have for himself. he smiled and told me the greatest pleasure of such a luxury is to share it with every person he works with.
That day I learned that giving is one thing, receiving is another and sharing your good fortune is the ultimate. Thankyou Johnny and I will be back in March 2008 to enjoy your smile and hospitality at Goshas the moment we arrive. After all, you can't beat those cocktails in the coconuts!
