If you had TCs no problems. Sure you need your passport to change them but a photocopy of the passport is usually is fine. Once you've been to a Money Changer they don't usually need to see your Passport again.
And BTW Indonesian law requires that you carry your passport with you at all times - I know no one does, but that's the law - see posts below.
I am always astounded at the large number of people here who rely on cash & credit cards, despite all the posts re: credit card fraud.
And re: in-room-safes - we have one identical to those in most places we've stayed in Bali in our house - it comes with instructions how to open it without the password. Nuff said. Probably the safest is the Hotel's safety deposit boxes if you have your own padlock.
I figure take cash if you can afford to lose it. My husband goes to varied remote places in Indonesia for 2 months every year - he takes some cash, mostly T/Cs & a card for emergencies.
For me Travelers Cheques are the way to go - & have been for me in over 30 years of going to Bali. I can;t afford to lose money - & with TCs I won't.
