To be honest it sounds like you would be better off staying close to the main centre the entire length of your stay,as it sounds like you LOVE to shop (like me!)
From personal experience we did start off doing exactly what you guys are thinking...moving out to Tanjung after staying in Legian etc but I would not bother. (my opinion)You may think that you will be able to stay away from the shops, but you are wrong, once you have the shopping bug it is hard to turn your back on it i tell ya!
My sister and her partner came away with us in August and they were determined to stay out at the Aston,all i can say is that she regreted it big time as they ended up going into the main centre every day which is about a 25 min drive and they were spending quite a bit on taxis by doing this.
The main reason for staying close to the centre is so you can go back and forth between the shops and your hotel for dropping off arm loads of shopping and having a quick dip in the pool.
Maybe another option would be somewhere like Tuban which is a tad more quiet but a 3 min cab ride to shops.
Whatever you guys decide..You will have the best time ever!
