I didnt think I would bother with a local sim card but because my mum was not well I got an Sim Card The card cost 100,000 rupiah (12.00) and this gave us 10,000 credit. we put another 100K on it. I can speak to Aus landline or an Australian mobile very cheaply - like about 10 minutes for about 5K rupiah. If we went with Texts only on our Aust mobile they would have cost us 75c per text. I think it worth the investment.
