We are not big users of our mobiles but have them with us just in case, and for that reason alone, we can't be bothered buying local sim cards as the cost saving is minimal if you don't make many calls.
If your son's number is already in your phone's phonebook, you can just sms to it the same as back home. Normal voice calls are just the same, although these can get expensive if you make many, and the charges apply to each phone.
