Clifford died in 2006. He was a prolific writer and according to some one of the best authorities on Bali in the 20th century.

It's well worth reading the Notes on the Balinese Cockfight in its entirety because the excerpts posted by Thorsten don't really do it justice. Despite having humourous bits it is in fact a very serious look at Balinese culture and what makes it "tick". There are copies on the net - just google.

In recent years, Geertz's work has come under criticism because it focussed too much on a common Balinese "type". Recent research has shown enormous variations in adat, village structure and traditions across the island.

Clifford's first wife, Hildred, is also a fine anthropologist and has published a lot about Balinese culture, focussing on kinship and family life.

Because they published countless books and papers between them, it is difficult to recommend anything specific. Much of Clifford's work is also scholarly and difficult to get through. One of my favourites is Hildred and Clifford's jointly authored "Kinship in Bali" which is a must read if you want to understand how Balinese family life works. Hildred's "The Life of a Balinese Temple" is also a fabulous publication and an in-depth look at the history and importance of a temple in a Balinese village.

Lots of others, but too many to list here.
