I have done this trip by bus only once and never again, it is long 23 hours for memory as Mic said you must cross the ferry from Java to Bali it is most uncomfortable and really you do not see much because most buses travel during the night. The prices for air travel is almost the same as bus travel. You could if you like fly to Jakarta and then travel by train to say surabaya but i wouold sujest travelling via excutive class. after arriving at surabaya then you could travel to Kuta via bus, if you decide to do something like that can i sugest staying at say Malang, jojakarta,and surabaya for a couple of days each place then you can do some days trips and give yourself a break from the very long haul.
