Sanur is a quieter area than say Kuta/ Legian and of course, so far excaped any nasty trouble. If you get up early in the morning (easy with a 4yo)hire a pushbike and wheel around some of the backstreets, and beach fronts you will get to see the Balinese going about their business (smiling, waving and saying hello). Kuta is about a half hour away by Taxi, Ubud hust abit further.
By staying in Ubud, the climate is just a little cooler. More of a cultural centre, up there you can do a bike ride (Bali Baik) and experience the paddy workers and rural life. And, just look around at a slightly different area.
Both areas have great assetts, and I think you have probably made as good a choice as possible on a first trip. We will often just pack a smaller bag, and head off to Amed, or Ubud or just somewhere just for a few nights, and retain our Sanur accom for the bulk of our gear, but many people will just equally divide their time between areas. Unless you stay in Lovina, you are never that far from the airport.
