and what I have done in the past is to send your details but give the wrong expiry date. The only way they would notice this is if they tried to use it. Not very straight of me I suppose but I don't like to send details like this especially I didn't like it when they wanted credit card details and photo copy of passport because somebody could really have a party with that!
Having said that, the hotels I used currently don't ask for credit card details.
