From our experience travelling through other Asian countries, we do like to take things for the kids when staying in the villages as it is a good icebreaker. We have never used lollies at it does seem hypocritical when I rarely gave my own children lollies - as much for the artificaial colours and flavours as the dental issues. One of the things we found most effective was to take a pack of little bubble blowers. You can buy a box of 100 from party suppliers for weddings etc and they are inexpensive. Even the adults liked to take a turn. Someone else I know takes balloons and blows them up and they can be batted around as a game, but you do need to make sure the bits of broken balloon are picked up.
