Sorry to hijack your post, just wanted to add something that may help you decide on a good hotel. I have completed quite a bit of study and have found these ideas to work wonders to finding a good hotel.

1) Choose what area you want to stay at (you have stated Kuta/Legian/Seminyak)
2) Choose a price range along with what type of hotel you want to stay at (close to beach, dining, shopping, away from everything) etc.
3) Go to the following link to give you some basic independant reviews for different hotels available in the area you are staying at (this website rocks!!) http://micbali.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=area
4) The following two websites are good for reviews and the second is good to give you a basic idea on prices:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g294226-Bali-Vacations.html (this website is good once you know the hotel you want to stay at. It also gives a big tick to my fav hotel, Tegal Sari in Ubud : < ) )
http://www.asia rooms.com/indonesia/bali.html will need to remove space between asia rooms (This website is good for basic prices of hotels. You can choose your area/price range. It also has many reviews from people who have stayed in the hotels. I must warn you some people have been very truthful with the hotels)
5) Ask the forum for general information like you have. Once you get some names, you can search the above links along with searching the forum.

More in relation to your question, I have stayed in the following three hotels in the Kuta/Legian Area:
*Melasti Beach Resort (is nice and next to beach. I have heard the rooms are starting to become tired though)
*White Rose Hotel (Shopping Mecca hotel. Right in the middle of Kuta but tucked away in a little oasis. Little bit pricey and long walk to beach)
*Bakungs Beach Cottages (Cheap & Nasty. It fine is you are on a budget. Think of it as a wine analogy. Do you want to drink Penfolds or Queen Adelaide?)

Hope this helps
