Umbrellas aren't really that convenient to use while shopping because you have them up and down constantly. What did look useful was disposable poncho things. Not sure where you get them. A rain jacket wouldn't serve you well either unless you were in the rice fields walking or walking village roads and not really intending to go into the shops. Something you need to keep taking on and off would be a nuisance.
Sorry, I've not been helpful but I just got back and basically I just got used to being wet/damp. It was rather nice.
