We did that on our recent trip, one suitcase and a stripey bag. Only put light things in stripey bag, infact it wasn't even full. When we arrived in sydney it had split and there was all our belongings going around the courasel. Thankfully we didn't loose anything. So my tip is, buy the bali bags other people have talked about, they are more sturdy.
