I live in Sydney and it depends on how many planes land at the same time as you. We always make sure that we have something to declare as have found this at most times to be a quicker process, so we always buy a wooden object to bring home and declare (take note of what bags you put items to declare in, so you can identify to customs what you have to declare). On average is about half an hour to an hour, this being from the time you collect your bags then go through customs BUT DEFINATELY DEPENDING ON the amount of planes landing at the same time as you. From my observations those that say that they
have nothing to declare often have bags thoroughly checked.
You didn't mention how much time you have to get to your connecting flight?
