My children have roughly always been in a size smaller than their age but for eg my daughter is 4 but is wearing a size 2 dress today. My son is 6 and can wear anything from a size 4 to size 6 and he is a little on the tall side but is slim. If you are buying pants, shorts or skirts I would try & buy clothes with an adjustable waist, the elastic is attached to buttons either side & can easily take in or let out by adjusting the elastic on the buttons (the elastic has button holes at intervals.
So after all that rambling I would probably buy size for age eg size 6 for 6 year old cos it is better to be too big.
Cheers
