dennisc you obviously don't know any serious surfers. They would no more hire a board than they'd wear fairy wings at Ulus. Many surfers have boards custom made for them or spend countless hours researching boards to get the perfect ones. And they always have at least 2. While Bali is a surfing mecca for short stayers, it's also the take off point for long stayers (like my husband) heading for Lombok, Roti, GLand, Sumatra etc etc for months at a time.

Hiring a crappy board on the beach in Bali is not an option for these people! They also tend to travel very light and aren't moaning at all about including their boards in their baggage allowance - just concerned about the stuff here lately re: Garuda charging a board exit tax - especially as after 2 months away money is low. My hubby's 2 boards & baggage weigh in under 20K & he's pretty typical of a serious surfer.

I do agree tho that for the average beginner surfer on a short holiday hiring a board may well be a good option:)
