I have never stayed anywhere "BAD" though, if we wanted to go to Bali and couldn't book accomodation, we would stay in a tent & still have a great time.
IMHO It's the place, people, weather & the cost of holidaying that makes it great .
I would suggest we are in the hotel room about 2 hours "waking" a day.
