There is a difference between 3G and Next G. 3G was the first roll out by Telstra which does not work in all areas. Next G was the most recent rollout of the 3G network which gives the benefits to people in more rural areas as well, not just metropolitan areas. An original 3G phone will not offer all the 3G benefits in the same network areas of Next G. An example of this is I have an original 3G phone and although I have video calls etc they do not work where I live only once I get closer to town. With a Next G phone I would have video calls etc available to me at home as well.
