I think that if you are swimming in a chlorinated pool then it's not too bad however surfing or swimming in salt water is a no no as the salt draws the ink to the surface and can lead to a lack of distinction in the tattoo. I had one done by Lanyok at Buddha Face, awesome artist and as clean as you would want, however I was "supporting" my mate who was keen for his first but nervous so we downed a couple of Bintangs beforehand, unfortunately a young french lady showed interest in a tattoo so our appointment got bumped back so we had just a couple more beers then by the time I had followed my mate and had mine done well I had had enough and can't really remember much of our dinner. Waking with one of the largest hangovers ever all I could do was fall into the pool, it helped my head and didn't seem to affect the tattoo, never again!!
