I've seen this subject discussed much lately.

It's getting all muddled because folks are talking about two different issues as if they are the same.

SURFBOARD CHARGE: virtually all airlines have an additional charge when you travel with a surfboard. They claim it is to compensate for the bulky-ness and extra special handling the board(s)require. The specifics are unique to each airline, the $ amount varies etc. This is entirely an AIRLINE fee. It has nothing to do with the airport, country, etc.

SURFBOARD (Airport) EXIT TAX : I am not aware if such a thing exists exiting Indonesia. I have never experienced it. A friend departed Indonesia in March with a surfboard. There was no Airport Tax, just the normal surfboard baggage fee from the airlline. I think it is unlikely such a (Indonesian government) tax exists.

There must be thousands of surfers who have exited Bali recently. Anyone want to clarify the TAX issue?
