I had the dreaded white chalk cross on my bag in Jan this year and it was the last bag to go around the carousel. Everyone else had their bags and had left the area and I was still waiting, and getting rather worried, but all was well, all the staff telling me not to worry "bag coming soon". And true to their word it came out last, I just picked it up and walked out, no checking at all, so who knows what the chalk marks means. Maybe if you look suspicious they will check it, maybe it just depends on the mood of the official on the day.
