I agree with Schaff, take your own currency particularly if to buy another currency eg us$ will cost you to convert.
I took a photo of the exchange rates on the board outside a money changer 3 weeks ago.

The larger the note denominiation eg $100 = highest exchange rate.
$50 are sometimes same, but $20s and $10s are lower rate.
Travellers cheques are usually lower rate too.
Make sure your notes are in good condition, no crumpled bits or tears.
If you see a higher rate at one money changer, be aware! The higher the rate usually indicates that they are rogue money changers and one way or another they will cheat you out of your money, eg slide of hand. If a money changer offers you 20000rp notes, they are usually scammers too! It is obviously easier to count your thousands or millions in 100,000 or 50,000rp notes.
