You should have an international drivers license plus your own countries drivers license with you plus the right papers for the vehicle you are driving. IME, anything less than that and it will cost ya. But, in saying that, if you are caught, you just pay the 'fine' and then off you go. The police will stop you for all sorts of real or imagined infringements anyway (and I know a million other posters are now going to post about how they have ridden bikes for 30 years in Bali and never been stopped ever) so you probably will end up paying something to somebody at some stage.
