Just got home & we saw exchange rates from Rp. 7750 to Rp. 8050 at 'no commision' money changers in Kuta.
I'd suggest you buy just Rp. 200,000 here before you go so you have enough for cab fare (if needed) once you arrive, then change the rest of your money over there. You can pay the USD$25 Visa On Arrival in AUD$ & get the change in Rupia anyway.
Just watch the money changers though...
If they go to give you Rp. 20,000 notes there will be a lot of them & it's easy for the shonky ones to flick a few on the floor behind the counter as they count them back to you. I know... I got scammed for around Rp. 800,000.
