Avoid baby entrapment hazard. Take a tape-measure with you if you go shopping for a baby cot, so you can check the size of gaps & openings accurately. Bars should be between 5 and 8.5cm apart (or maximum of 3.3 inches). Heads can get caught in gaps aver 8.5cm. Which is a nuisance & distressing if the baby/toddler is trapped head first but lethal if the little body wriggles thro first (babies' heads are bigger than their bodies).
Cot mattresses should fit snugly, to within 2.5cm or 1 inch of sides & ends.
Australian Safety Standards are very strict re these features re the sale of both new & secondhand cots. Legal standards in other countries may not be so strict.
