Angela but it's a chicken's lot in life to end up on the table sooner or later. Were I one of them - no scratch that and let's make it a question. If you were born a chicken with the inevitable destiny of one day being somebody's dinner, how would you prefer to get there.
1) As a broody hen leading a longish life but finally becoming a boiler.
2) A battery chicken ...no need to go into that one again.
3) Free run village bird, short lived and having the head cut off at 3 months or so.
4) Fighting Cock. Wonderful life as pet. Admired and cared for by a loving owner. Reasonably long life. Quick death when it comes.
My perception is guided by what's outside my house right now and in my neighbours' farmyards. And yours?
You are correct that in a couple of hours the men will be out on the roadside stroking their cocks. They have a mandi first of course.
