Last year I was invited to attend a cleanising ceremony, the offerings included small puppies. This is a part of Balinese culture, unfortunately cock fighting is an off shoot, but still forms part of the anthropology of Bali. To get a better understanding of the "real" Bali I would recommend you read Fred Eiseman's Bali Sekala & Niskala Vol 1. The piece on the Eka Dasa Rudra about the ceremony that is held to cleanse the universe has quite graphic descriptions of large scale offerings.
