I had this happen to me on a flight to Bangkok, and yes it was removed or stolen from my checked in luggage, this happened just after the 9/11. I only had one lock on my bag and another zip was tied with a ribbon, this section held my hairspray and it was taken out. My girlfriend who was travelling with me had her's taken from her bag too. I used to be a little careless with securing my luggage, but now everything is done with lock and key!
I have also been asked at check-in at sydney airport when travelling to Bali if I have any aerosols in my bag upon check-in and had to remove a hairspray can. So ever since I have presumed this to be a 'No No' hence why I dont' bother anymore.
