We stayed there last year and despite its large size, found it to be a friendly and relaxing place for a holiday. If you just want to get away from it all but be within easy access of Kuta attractions (?) and shopping, the Kartika is great.
The rooms are comfortable and well serviced, pool is large and well maintained and the gardens are nicely laid out. The restaurants are just ok - we preferred to dine elsewhere at night. Overall, the place lacks soul but if you just want to veg out, read some books, be close to shops and laze in the pool, it is a nice (and pricy) place to stay.
If you're lucky enough to be there for your birthday the manager sends a cake to your room! And returning guests get an invite to the manager's cocktail party - some people think this is swish, but it is little more than small talk over dead things on side plates.
