I was there in 2004 and the traffic was horrendous. It seems that Java (for example) closes down for a week and everyone comes over to Bali, the whole family plus the SUV. Traffic comes to a standstill. It was quicker to walk from Legian to Kuta than catch a taxi. If you are going to or from the airport, allow a lot of time. Imagine the worst traffic jam on the freeway and you have some idea.
