I agree, the drive home after a pretty much sleepless night (and busy previous day) was a bit hairy, but by that stage I was on about my third wind and was WIDE awake! Of course I had a strong coffee before leaving the airport. I slept like a baby as soon as I got home though, lol.
I actually just went to the Thrifty site to go through the motions and see what they cost now...
A "$43 Mitsubishi Lancer" added up to $75.63 by the time you added insurance and fees, and a "$36.50 Hyundai Getz" ended up being $68.94.
I know my last trip up, I added $12 in fuel before reaching the airport, and fuel prices have gone up a lot since then, so it'd be a bit more now. So the cheapest you'd be looking at is around $80+ in the little buzz box and the price would go upward from there.
I've just noticed they have a pick up point at "Wollongong airport" now, which is at Albion Park Rail and much closer to home for me, so the inconvenience of the pick up and drop off is minimised there, but the cost is still not as cheap as it first seems.
And of course, like your hubby says, driving home after an overnight flight isn't necessarily a good idea if it can be avoided! :)
