Get a friends sim card from here in Australia, a different carrier to yours and try it in your phone, if it works then your phone is unlocked. If it is locked you will have to get it unlocked.
Once in Bali buy a sim card from one of the many places, they will set your phone up for you if you ask nicely and away you go, no problems.
Take alist of the numbers of people you may want to text to or phone in case once you swap the sims your phone loses all it's memory...mine is so old it does.
Some places ask you to register for the sim card, some don't, if you have to you will need your passport.
