Forumites reported a few months ago that there was a scam going on in Bali where you bought duty free and it was taken off you on boarding. However, that problem seems to have been solved.
Personally, I would buy in Melbourne on arrival. According to the the Government website the GAL's ban only applies to international flights and not domestic.
You might like to check out Downtown Duty free shops to pre order on line... just in case your plane is late and your rushing through.
