respectful when I was living in Bali - and driving myself in my Kijang - between August 06 and end of January this year.

Whenever I was pulled-over (often as they are really tough on checking Licenses/Taxes Helmets for bike riders) I always had my International Licence handy and presented it together with my South Australian Licence (International is only valid in conjunction with a licence from home country). I can honestly say that, apart from an over-zealous guy on cnr Airport & Bypass Idul Fitri morning (nothing else to do as roads were deserted) who backed-off when I told him I did not appreciate his attitude and that is not the way to treat a guest in his country, I have nothing but praise for the others (at least 10 times) who were absolutely professional. They always ask "where are you going" but hey, that's Bali not just Police, and always after checking wished me "a good trip".

Much, I think, is the manner in which the motorist acts towards them; if you are friendly and courteous, you are more likely to receive reciprocal attention.
