I have found in the past that as long as you are straight up front with the customs guys they will go out of their way to help you. This has meant, in the past, when bringing your goodies back into Australia they will ask you what the camera is now worth. After a few weeks of ownership and use it will definitely be less than the store value, and by a large amount. I wouldn't gaurantee that this will be the case for everyone but it has sure worked for me. I have never had to pay duty on anything, although I am rarely over the limit, but I do declare everything I carry. They don't like surprises.
Cheers
