You can pick up a cheap second hand older model phone on Ebay for under $20 if you look around. Add about another $5-10 in postage and it's cheaper than unlocking. Cheaper or similar to hiring, depending how long you stay - and you can always give it away to someone else, or sell it again on Ebay when you get home and make some of the money back.
