There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about the new regulations. I think I follow them but will stand corrected.
Regulations are designed to counter possible terrorist threats.
When entering the International section of the terminal you are allowed to carry in your HAND BAGGAGE only 1 litre of liquids. These must be in containers of ?think 100ml each max and be carried in a plastic transparent bag about 200ml square. What constitutes a liquid seems to vary but I have seen lipstick included....why?
You can carry whatever you want in your checked in baggage and what you buy in the duty free area is not a problem. However if you go through several International airports - eg Auckland - Sydney - Bali, If you buy duty free booze in Auckland it will be confiscated in Sydney unless you have put into checked baggage. If you buy booze after check in to International area in Sydney no problem.
Remember liquids include water. My wife was held up for having a bottle of spring water in her baggage recently. She had to scull it down to get through to International. My advice is to pack all liquids that you don't absolutely need on your journey into checked baggage, carry only what you must have in hand baggage (eg my wife needs eye drops on a plane) and buy duty free at your last departure opr arrival.
