Scales-How can you see the weight?

Just a bit of a problem.
Was checking out the weight of my suitcase today on our normal home set of scales. Well i couldn't see the weight as the suitecase covered the display. Was going to buy some in Bali to check out our weight on way home but carn't see the point if i carnt see the reading of the weight. Am i going mad or has someone got a simple answer to this? !!
