Your friend certainly has my sympathy. She can heat a large amount(ie wheatbag amount)of dry salt or clean sand in a dry pan or wok over a stove or fire. Pour into cloth container (an old T-shirt tied both ends) and tie this heatedsalt/sand object to the back with a sarong or another old T-shirt. It is usually better to remain as mobile as possible with painful backs.
Smaller amounts of heated salt/clean sand can relieve the pain of children's earaches. Then the heated salt/sand just needs to be poured into a scarf or man's handkerchief.
If the above is not possible. Place a small towel (or similar) into a bowl and pour boiling water over it. Extract the towel with tongs. Put in a plastic bag and seal it (?rubber band). Wrap in cloth. And place against the painful area....Magnolia
