i have't been in 8 years to denpasar. the way i remember it hot smelly and choing on exhaust fumes. not a very friendly area and the balinese were less inclined to talk to you. stayed 2 hours and back to kuta. if you want to experience the different culture,go but don't expect it to be like the tourist areas because its not even close.
