A couple of things to check before you decide to use ATM's alone (we do): firstly, ensure that you have more than one card for the account or more than one account to use in case your card gets eaten or misplaced; secondly, ensure that your cards are activated for use overseas and that the PIN you have will work; and thirdly, check the charges from your bank per transaction, because the amount you can take out over there in a single transaction is quite low (Rp 1 miilion, 1 1/2 million or sometimes 2 miilion, usually), so you'll probably be taking money out regularly. Some credit unions don't charge any overseas transaction fees at all, others, and some banks also, charge AU$5 per transaction, which can add up. Cheers, Sue.
