First of all I'd like to say that travelling around Bali and Lombok by motorbike is by far the best way to see this beautiful islands and of course is very fun!! Don't believe of all that scary stories of hospitals full of westerners injured of worse dead in accidents, if you know how to drive a bike in your country you'll be able to drive it in Bali and Lombok too. I'm not saying you don't have to be careful, because they don't have many traffic rules in Indonesia, but if you go slowly ( which is also the best way to enjoy the spectacular views all around ) and always alert ( there are also a lot of dogs and other animals on the road that can be very dangerous ) nothing will happen to you and you'll have a great time.
The travel from Italy is very long and tiring so before jumping on the bike I chilled out a little bit in Kuta in a very nice and cheap cottage with a lovely swimming pool. For a backpacker like me Kuta it's a little bit too turistic but after all it wasn't that bad, but I couln't spend a whole holiday there. I easily found the motorbike in Legian street ( 10 days for 200000 rs ) and after a day of warm up I left Kuta for Padangbai. Going out of Denpasar was not as easy as I thought, traffic is really crazy and if you don't know the roads you can really get a good headache before finding the right one. I always took coastal roads: the views are breathtaking and is really difficult to keep the eyes on the road. Once out of the city driving is fantastic, the blue sea is on your right and green paddy fields and palm trees are all around. I liked very much Padangbai, is a lovely quiet village where you can really relax yourself doing nothing. There weren't much tourists and nobody disturbed me. I had great time snorkelling or just relaxing on the beach. Bias Tugel beach was my favourite: small, white sand, torquoise crystal water, huge lava rocks, almost deserted all the time: can you ask something more for your tropical holiday?
One day I decided to go to visit the Temples of Pura Besakih and I took a mountain road to Putung ( that was not even indicated on my map ). It was really fantastic!! The views of the south coast of Bali, of Lombok and Nusa Penida and of the impressive volcano Agung were really incredible. I liked very much the Temples too. It was some kind of holyday and there were a lot of people coming and going with the offers. The colors of the temples and of the dresses of the faithful were absolutely amazing.
