We have been to Uluwatu and GWK a number of times. We have seen the kecak at sunset. We have usually walked around GWK to see the two large monuments (hopefully flood lit, so you can see them after dark too).
During the day we have day, we have left Legian before lunch, visited Nusa Dua, Geger Beach for lunch, on to Uluwatu later in the afternoon, Dreamland beach then GWK in time to freshen up for dinner at deMiMidi restaurant.
Its lovely to see the sunset from the cliffs edge, but I might add, the sunset far to your left, appearing south, not straight ahead as it is in Legian.
I have been to Bali with newbies for the last 4 out of 8 trips so have visited lots of special places to show them. (Bit like I am showing off my special islands attributes!)
Its lovely to watch the lights come on, but I must admit, last visit, I had my back to the south and really missed it all. (someone has to have those seats, and it was a first time experience for the others who we dined with).
Do go after the kecak, you win some, you lose some, still well worth the lovely light show.
