From reading BTF regularly we already know everyone hates them, they are the worst and many will never ever use them again. Unfortunately there are so many posts it makes it all very boring.
I note you said your friends problem is very complicated but I dont know why any airline has to double check someone's personal visa arrangements. Isnt it the traveller's responsibility to have it all in place?
